We know that talking about money and the church is not everybody's favorite pastime. But our job as pastors is not to preach what people want to hear, but what God's Word actually says. Furthermore, we never hold people to a standard that we don't hold ourselves to. When you really think about it, it would be unloving and irresponsible for us to withhold the teaching of God's Word on any issue, including the issue of money and giving. We ask that you prayerfully consider the following biblical principles on money and giving.
Consider these two facts:
- Of Jesus' 38 parables, 16 of them concerned handling money and possessions.
- The Bible has more than 2,350 verses dealing with money and possessions, more than twice as many as all the verses on prayer and faith, combined.
The Bible contains many principles concerning how we handle money and possessions. Here are a few:
- All our possessions, including 100% of our income belongs to God (1 Chronicles 29:14)
- Our talents, skills, capabilities, and spiritual gifts are all given to us by God (Matthew 25:14-30)
- Even our bodies belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
- When we don't give our tithes and offerings, we are robbing God (Malachi 3:8-12)
- When we don't use our skills and abilities for God's purposes, we incur God's wrath (Matthew 25:14-30)
- We should give with the right heart-attitude
- We should give willingly and cheerfully, not as under compulsion (2 Corinthians 9:6-8)
- It is such a great privilege to give, that we should be searching for opportunities (2 Corinthians 8:2-4)
- God wants us to bless others with what He has given us
- God gives us more than we need so we will be generous to others (2 Corinthians 9:11)
- Our gifts to others reinforces the Gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 9:13)
- God generously rewards those who give
- God's greatest gift to us is salvation through Jesus Christ (Romans 8:32)
- God always provides everything we need to do His will at all times (2 Peter 1:3)
- If we give generously, we reap generously (2 Corinthians 9:6)
